A Truly Useful Introduction

Presenting A Reasonably Comprehensive Summation Of The Core Dramatic Premise Of This Timeless, All-Encompassing Romantic Drama…

Dr. Edward Eastman

A recently divorced middle-aged master surgeon, the scion of grand philanthropic family heritage, and reluctant heir to an immense fortune arrives at a spiritual and emotional crossroads the evening he inadvertently meets;

MEET THE MAIN CHARACTERS

Miss Rachael Day

A striking looking & highly talented thirty-something artist, waitress, and part time university student with a penchant for riding waves, a deep relationship with ancient Asian philosophy & culture, and illuminating wisdom far exceeding her years.

About The Story

The first meeting of these two remarkable, complex, and talented people happens the evening Rachael crashes a private Beverly Hills counseling session for seriously and/or potentially terminally ill patients.

Urged on by a concerned medical student friend Rachael attends the meeting after recently being diagnosed with a rare & potentially fatal parasitic virus.

Dr. Eastman, temporarily presiding over that night’s meeting, becomes genuinely attracted to Rachael’s brilliant wisdom, vivacious personality, empathy, and self-effacing humor.

When Rachael’s unauthorized presence at the meeting is eventually discovered by another doctor who summarily dismisses her from the clinic, Dr. Eastman is left strangely bereft over having no real justification for or way of contacting this remarkable girl.

“A Fantastic Literary Remix Hitting All The High Points Of An Eclectic Collection Of Social Myths & Cultural Icons, This Tale Pulls  Together The Best Aspects Of Modern Manners & Ancient Philosophies.

It’s A Heady Cocktail Of California Beach Culture, Beverly Hills Excesses, Malibu & Santa Barbra Chic, Luxury Cars & Buddhist Monks.

Throw In Fine Arts, High Finance, Old Money & The Things Money Can’t Buy & You’re Half Way There.”

Later that very evening Edward serendipitously rescues Rachael when her clunky surf wagon breaks down along Sunset Blvd. near Pacific Palisades.  There begins a remarkable dialogue that eventually blossoms into something far more meaningful than simple friendship.

Dr. Eastman takes on a personal interest in her case, and she delights the doctor by offering to teach him to ride a surfboard, something, much to her amazement, he is actually interested in.

In the natural unfolding of events, and within the relatively short space of mere months, Edward and Rachael have discovered a richly profound connection, and fall in love.

Edward becomes so genuinely enamored of this sapient, spontaneous, and courageous Buddhist beauty that he stuns himself by proposing to her, proposing despite, or perhaps because of, the knowledge that should he not find a cure she may have less than two years left to live. They have become inseparable.

Rachael accepts his proposal and they marry in a simple, unannounced civil ceremony, the first of three marriage ceremonies they’ll eventually share as a continuing pledge to each other.

No less than a revolutionary act on both their parts, their sudden marriage results in provoking rampant controversy across each of their respective worlds.

For Edward, his marrying a “commoner”, so outside of his age, class, & faith, and in such simple fashion, without involving his prominent family, seems a direct & inexcusable violation of both tradition and his stature in respectable society.

For Rachael, marrying an older, ultra wealthy Jewish doctor is considered a cheap, clichéd, uncool sell-out to those stuck in the non-conformist, sybaritic lifestyle of the colorful bohemian beach culture she orbits.

And while the simple fact of his being married resolves a final legal caveat to Edward eventually assuming control of the Eastman family’s massive trust and many foundations, it causes an uproar among both his business partners and his east coast family members.

Most everyone in Edward’s social circles casually assumes the girl is a usurping gold-digger, and that he’s somehow succumbed to a serious and aberrantly shocking lapse of judgment.

The controversy is only acerbated by Edward’s abrupt decision to divest himself of his prodigious medical practice and devote himself exclusively to time spent with his new wife, and to seemingly emulate her bohemian, free & easy beach lifestyle.

Amazingly, The Act Of Surfing Provides A Perfect Analogy Of Our Actual Lives;

Years Of Difficult & Determined Practice Is Required, Enduring Endless Days Of Random, Mostly Uncomfortable  Conditions, Then Hours Of Tedious Waiting & Sudden Frantic Bursts Of Intense  Perfectly Timed Exertion, And All For A Few Moments Of Fleeting,  Blissful Thrills.

And Each Wave Is Different And Requires You Constantly Adapt To Its Chaotic Movements Or – Fail Miserably.

All It Takes Is One Wrong Move And In A Split Second You’re Abruptly Dumped On Your Ass – ‘Wiped Out’ – And Forced To Start All Over.

But If You Can Let Go & Flow With The Changes  – Then It’s A Short Yet Ultimately Thrilling Ride.

Once You’ve Tasted The Rush, ‘The Slide’ – There’s Only One Choice; Go Right Back For More & For As Long & As Often As You’re Able…

Taking advantage of the asymptomatic phase of her illness Rachael & Edward embark on a series of adventures in health & self-discovery, which includes her teaching Edward to surf.

As a wedding gift, Edward purchases land on an exclusive, private Santa Barbara ranch that inhabits miles of the last great stretches of wilderness coastline left in Southern California, and is also the home of the West Coast’s premier surfing breaks.

While a custom redwood ranch house with a sweeping view of the coast is being built Edward offers to take Rachael anywhere in the world she wants.  Thrilled, she chooses a trip to the enchanting island of Bali, in Indonesia, and to nearby Java, where she hopes they can ride one of the most perfect waves in the world.

The two of them journey to the volcanic island often referred to as “The Morning of the Earth,” and immerse themselves in the ancient Vedic culture that is Bali.  Here they remarry in a grand & exotic Balinese wedding ceremony attended by friends, spies, international travelers, and conducted on the grounds of a thousand-year-old temple.

Rachael has told Edward about Grajagan Bay on the wild easternmost tip of the island of Java. From Bali’s Benoa harbor Edward charters a classic sailing yacht for their journey to the world’s ultimate surfing break.  There they decamp to a tree-house and ride the streamlined mile-long wave that flawlessly wraps past a lush tiger preserve set in a torrid primeval Asian jungle.

Throughout their Asian adventure Rachael’s light & love of life shines, exerting a profound & positive influence over Edward.  They engage in deeply personal conversations the likes of which Edward has never known.  For the first time in his life he feels complete freedom, and she helps him to seek clearer answers to questions & issues he’d never been willing or able to wholly deal with.

Always something of a loner, tragically unlucky in love, and at a personal and ethical crossroads regarding the vast financial holdings he’s poised to inherit, Edward discovers the illuminating ethics, compassion, and mindfulness of Rachael’s mystical faith & practices to provide a soul soothing panacea and newfound source of inner determination.

Edward comes to realize that Rachael’s lifestyle, which to the uninformed appears as simplistic, directionless, self-absorbed, and completely unambitious, is in fact a richer, broader, and far more challenging existence than he or any other casual observer could possibly realize. He discovers that pursuing Enlightenment is not for the lazy, the uninspired, nor the fearful.

Rachael’s well-reasoned rejection of modern materialistic values becomes a revelation to a man whose entire life has been surrounded by the ultimate materialists on the planet – the super rich.

The underlying irony of Rachael & Edward’s relationship is that, for all intents,

It’s The Patient Who Is Actually Curing The Doctor.

Once they’ve returned to the states  Edward is called to face his family, and to deal with a deadly power struggle for control of the vast Eastman fortunes, precipitated in no small part by his marriage to Rachael. Edward refuses to not have Rachael with him at all times, and they travel together to the Newport, Rhode Island estate of the imposing Eastman family figurehead,  his elderly yet spry mother, long his staunchest supporter.

At the massive family estate in Newport R.I., Rachael wins over the matriarch’s heart and her complete confidence, an amazing feat in itself.  The changes Rachael has affected in Edward are obvious to his mother, and his newfound inner strength, calm, & seeming happiness is a surprise to his entire family.

Questions and challenges regarding Edward’s sanity and moral fiber are raised by certain relatives and their lawyers during an ongoing endeavor to wrest control of the immense wealth & power of the Eastman family estate.

In Edward’s long absence they’ve sought to discontinue using the Eastman Foundation for social work & education and to reinvest its entire assets into the defense & weapons technology industry, as well as supporting the careers of militaristic and authoritarian minded political forces.

These relatives know of Edward’s long history of tragic marriages, his reputation of being a social loner, and of being unpredictable & unorthodox – and they use it against him in a dramatic legal battle. Knowing nothing about Rachael’s illness, her intelligence, her ethics, or her amazing energy, Edward’s adversaries readily cast her as an opportunist and a usurper.

At this crucial point in their story, the first signs of Rachael’s serious illness begin to become apparent.  While on the East Coast Edward decides to bring in some of medicine’s top virologists to review Rachael’s case.  Department Heads from Harvard Medical and Johns-Hopkins all return the same troubling prognosis…incurable & inexorably fatal.

Frustrated by his seeming inability to save her, and angry at the continuing efforts to divert his potential role as ruling scion over the Eastman estate by staunch conservatives within his extended family, Edward wages an all out crusade against his antagonizing distant relations.

With the force of a lifetime of pent-up emotions, the inspiration and wisdom learned from his young wife, the help of a shrewd private detective and a prestigious lawyer who is a longtime family friend Edward goes into the federal courts of New York City to undermine all attempts to discredit him – and for the first time in his life actively assumes his destined role as leader of the Eastman family foundation.

When he defeats every legal challenge the depths of Edward’s love & admiration for Rachel come to the fore. He now realizes that from the first moment he met her that she was the true catalyst behind his winning back both his rightful role as head of the Eastman family, as well as reviving the health of his soul & destiny.

Edward and the now obviously exhausted Rachael finally return to their completed Hollister Ranch house in Santa Barbara. Here the two of them enjoy the last of a beautiful Indian Summer, inhabiting a postcard perfect pastoral scene, spending hours surfing, horse riding, flying kites, and just lazing on the beach building sand castles. It’s their first real time off from all the drama.

These are Rachael’s final days, and he senses it.  They talk about Edward’s upcoming work; and plan a new mission for the Eastman Foundation.  Rachael is his true muse, and between them, a far-reaching vision is born.

Then, months earlier than Edward expected, Rachael quietly dies in his arms in their splendid hilltop ranch house home.

Final Chapter – Epilogue

It’s two years later, and Edward is dedicating a new state-of-the-art children’s medical clinic in Bali.  We discover that Edward has used the Eastman Foundation, of which he is now the active director, to open a global network of children’s clinics, bringing top American doctors and medical equipment to the service of children in desperate need of complex surgical procedures.  And all of it free to those in need.

The one hundred children’s clinics he has built share the same name; The Beautiful Day Children’s Clinic. Edward Eastman is now a dramatically changed man, a spiritually fulfilled human being, and his late wife lives on, surviving through this work.

Later that evening Edward hosts a large dinner party at a major resort for his Bali Children’s Clinic Administrators and the press. In the mingling crowd appears an attractive woman in her mid-thirties, apparently crashing the party.

When she finally bumps into Edward she doesn’t know who he is, or that he’s the principal founder of the project, but in making small talk mentions seeing a longboard on a wonderfully restored classic Land Rover parked out front.

Upon finding out that it’s actually Edward’s board & Rover she offers a big smile, tells him she surfs too, also owns the very same year & model classic Rover back home, and explains she’s an Australian pediatrician on a long holiday who’d caught word of the new clinic and has shown despite being uninvited to perhaps offer her help.

She asks Edward if he knows any of the people in charge, or to whom she might speak with. Finally she introduces herself, and when she reveals her name is Dr. Rachael Newhope he just stares at her, transfixed in smiling, silent disbelief.

He tells her who he is, and in the following momentary awkward pause, the implied door to a romantic fate between the two doctors opens.  Now no stranger to the concept of mystic provenance, for Edward it’s like some sort of deja vu replay of the night he and  Rachael first met at his old LA clinic.

Listening yet mentally transfixed he momentarily hears her speaking as if from a nebulous distance.

She casually mentions something about the Buddhist concept of reincarnation, and the power of love to return to our lives as unexpectedly as it can depart, explaining that’s why she loves Asia, loves being a doctor, and her work healing the innocent whose lives have been hurt by no fault of their own.

Smiling silently, for Edward the crowd in the room seemed to fade into the background, as if both he and this Australian doctor were suddenly the only people in the room.

“Did I say something to disturb you Dr. Eastman?” she asked, noting his penetrating gaze.

“Why yes Dr. Newhope”, said Edward, now fully present.  “And in the most delightfully charming way.”
